Knob / Lever Cylinders

These are the cylinders found in the center of the lever handle or knob. They are generally not interchangeable with other lock types or brands, with the exception of some of the Schlage cylinders (shown here), which can even be adapted to some of the Schlage deadbolts. As with the other cylinders, avoid locks using pot metal cylinders. Some third party cylinders are available to rerofit one brand of lock to accept another brands key. For the better quality locks high security cylinders are also available for retrofit.

Most of these cylinders are removed by depressing a detent, as in the images shown below, and with the key turned the knob or lever can be removed.

Most of the knob cylinders use a C clip at the rear of the plug, but some, like the Schlage shown here use a spring loaded pin and a screw on cap. A variety of different tail pieces are available for many of the knob or lever cylinders, trying to use the incorrect one can result in a lock that will not function properly, or even at all.
