High Security Locks
High security locks and keys have been gaining in
popularity and in prevalance. The common problem of key control can render even the toughest
deadbolt lock useless. This is where high security cylinders and keys enter the picture. Most
of the major lock manufacturers of commercial grade products offer some sort of restricted keys
and high security versions of their cylinders. There are also manufacturers who deal in high
security exclusively, such as MedecoŽ. The main reason for using high security cylinders and
keys is the assurance that your keys are not being duplicated by unauthorized people. This is
usually achieved with a ID card or tag of some sort that came with the original keys, and is
needed to make copies. You can expect that if you lend a key out, as long as it was returned to
you, your key security is still intact. Lend out a normal 'run of the mill' key, and even if it
is returned to you there is no assurance it didn't make it's way to the corner hardware and
give birth to copies. You don't have to be paranoid to let the possibilties keep you up at
night. The other advantage to high security cylinders and locks can be their physical
toughness. Some high security locks only provide additional protection in terms of the key and
cylinder control, the actual lock the cylinder is installed in could be an average mid grade
item. High securiy cylinders can be found to retrofit many common locks. A true high security
deadbolt will have hardened steel and offer a far greater degree of resistance to drilling,
prying, and general brute force attacks. As a locksmith I do not look forward to having to
penetrate a good quality high security deadbolt.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO.
What most people are not aware of when purchasing a high security lock, is the
fact that they are more than likely tying themselves to the one locksmith shop
or security company that they purchased the lock from. Most of the
newer high security products are on a DBK (Dealer Based
Keyway) only. This means no other locksmith can duplicate the key and lock you
bought from your locksmith. Like it or not. Planning ahead in regards to your
need for duplicate keys is essential. Unlike a conventional key, you are
unlikely to be able to run out and get a copy made on Sunday afternoon. High
security keys are also going to cost more, this is something to ask about when
buying the lock. At $10 or more a piece, if you need a lot of copies, and are
prone to needing your locks rekeyed frequently, it can get expensive.
