Old Wood Door Deadbolt & Strike

INSTALLATIONS© Mitch Peifer

This door and jamb had been in bad shape for years This is how it appeared on my arrival, the old bit key lock broken out, the jamb a mass of cracks and putty. Pretty scary looking. A temporary solution to securing the door had to be found, as the owners were planning a complete rehab of the home in the next few months.

This was going to mean a MAG sleeve, repair strike and deadbolt. The area of available wood was not even enough to mount a full size MAG kit to cover the whole extent of damage to the edge of the door, so I would need to use the smaller size MAG and line it up as best as possible to take advantage of the solid wood part of the door. After picking the best spot possible I attach the boring jig and carefully cut out the 2-1/8" hole.

Next the MAG kit can be slid into place over the door with bolt already screwed into place on the MAG kit, the lock body gets screwed into place snug, but not fully tightened. The MAG can now be moved around to obtain the best position possible, no perfect place on this mess of a door. After finding the best spot, the mounting screws for the deadbolt can be fully tightened.

After drilling the 1 inch strike hole, the repair strike can be positioned and mortised into the jamb. The 6 long screws that mount the repair strike find some solid wood behind the mess. This is the best we can do without the customer getting the door and jamb replacement so badly needed. The customer is happy to have the door secured without spending a bunch of money that they would rather use on the upcoming rehab.
